Ready to get results for our kids and stand up for our schools on the Lincoln Public School Board, District 7!
Cheryl Meyer-Thompson

Meet Cheryl
I grew up on a farm in northeast Nebraska before attending UNL. After college graduation, I took a position at Milford Jr.-Sr. high school teaching Family and Consumer Science. I spent 38 years at Milford Public Schools where I sponsored the student organization: Family, Career and Community Leaders of American and taught a college credit culinary class through the National Restaurant Association: ProStart. After retirement, I was employed by UNL as a FCS student teacher supervisor for eight years.
My husband, Gary and I became foster parents in September 2013 to our grandson and later became his legal guardians in February, 2018. I enjoy spending time with my husband, grandson and friends. As a family, we enjoy attending Husker football games at home and away. My other interests include interior and fashion design, travel, and volunteering at my church.
38 Year Experience as a Teacher
During my teaching tenure, I served on the Nebraska Department of Education Curriculum Leadership and Framework Writing Team. I co-authored a UNL high school web class: The Protocol of Business and Personal Relationships. At Milford Public Schools I served on the Strategic Planning and School Improvement committee. I was the cooperating teacher for thirteen UNL student teachers and many practicum teachers.
One of the most beneficial educational training for the classroom I completed was the Boys Town Education Model Social Skills in the Schools. I completed numerous culinary courses to hone my skills for teaching students in the ProStart curriculum.
I was awarded the FCSTN (Family and Consumer Science Teachers of Nebraska) Teacher of the Year in 2005. In 2003, I was presented the National FCCLA Distinguished Service Award. I was awarded the Nebraska ProStart/Hospitality Education Foundation Teacher of the Year in 2006 and in 2016.
Seeing success of numerous students at Milford Public Schools competing on the national level for FCCLA and ProStart was incredibly rewarding. We completed service projects with the Community Blood Bank, Food Bank of Lincoln and Cedars Youth Services. After retirement, I have served as a culinary judge for LPS competitions at the Career Academy. I served on the Nebraska Hospitality Education Foundation. I have enjoyed volunteering on PTO’s at Norwood Park, and Ruth Hill elementary and now at Scott Middle where our grandson has attended. Being a room parent and planning parties for elementary students was so much fun. You just can’t take the teacher out of me!
